2/9/17: Whats New at Headwaters TU

Whats New at Headwaters TU?

Your Headwaters TU Board of Directors met at Alex Cerveniak’s house last week for it’s monthly board meeting.  Alex cooked beef stroganoff (click here for the recipe- but add about 1/2 cup of red wine in when you’re sauteing the onions, and substitute sirloin for the round steak) for everyone.

A couple highlights you might be interested to know about:

  • Andrea Hornby, Program Manager with the Shore to Shore Council of Michigan Girl Scouts, stopped by and gave a presentation on some of the opportunities out there for Headwaters and Girl Scouts to partner on some activities.
  • The Board voted unanimously in favor to contribute $2,500 to the Upper Black River Council (UBRC) for their ongoing work on the upper Black.  Specifically, for work planned in 2017 around the Northern Blue Lakes and Hardwood Creek areas, where 100 new structures will be installed.  We are extremely proud to support the UBRC and look forward to partnering with them on future projects.  Since 2008, they have enhanced 12.4 river miles by placement of approximately 1,120 Large and Small WoodyDebris (LWD/SWD) or other structures in the Upper Black River and Canada Creek, all to benefit the Black’s outstanding native brook trout fishery!
  • There were also updates on the Chapter’s annual budget, Conservation Committee, Education Committee, Fundraising Committee, Veteran’s event, Women’s event, and Activities Committee.
  • We are actively seeking donations for our annual banquet scheduled for 4/22/17 at the Ellison Place.  (Dinner tickets should be available any day!).  If you would like to donate cash or auction items, please contact Alex Cerveniak at headwaterstroutunlimited@gmail.com, or 989-370-6163.

Elk Poached Near Blue Lakes

The Michigan DNR is investigating the killing of an elk on Black River Rd, near Blue Lakes Rd., on around Christmas day.  Click here for the full story, anyone with any information on this or other suspected poaching incidents is asked to call the Report All Poaching hotline, (800) 280-9088. Tips may be left anonymously and information leading to a conviction may be eligible for a reward.  Click here for more info.

Tie One On! Thursday Night (2/16/17) at BJ’s

Don’t forget, our third Tie One On night is 2/16/17 at BJ’s in Gaylord!  We’ll have Josh Greenberg, owner of Gates Au Sable Lodge, up from Grayling to give a presentation on Early Spring Fishing on the Au Sable.  Should be a good one!

After, we’ll learn how to tie a modern variation of the Michigan Skunk Dry, the Rubber-legged Stone.  This pattern is a killer on Headwaters streams!

Headwaters Facebook Group

We now have a Facebook group for our chapter.  This is a forum for members of the Headwaters TU, and interested parties, to communicate with each other and learn about chapter activities.
